Arad to Become an Independent Producer
Source: Marvel Entertainment, Inc.
May 31, 2006
Marvel Entertainment, Inc. today announced that the company has entered into a new arrangement with Avi Arad to independently produce films for Marvel under his own production company banner, Avi Arad Productions. In this new capacity, Arad will remain actively involved in Marvel's upcoming film slate, including Iron Man and Incredible Hulk (aka "Hulk 2"), the first two films anticipated to be financed and produced by Marvel under its new film financing slate. Arad will also remain attached to produce various licensed productions, including the upcoming Spider-Man 3, scheduled for release next year, and subsequent sequels. Consistent with this restructuring, Arad is resigning from his corporate positions as Chairman and CEO of Marvel Studios, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel and a Marvel director, but will continue to serve as Creative Advisor for Marvel through the remainder of 2006.
Michael Helfant, President and COO of Marvel Studios, and Kevin Feige, Marvel Studio's President of Production, will lead Marvel Studios and its continuing development of a growing slate of feature films, television and other entertainment projects. Helfant, an industry veteran with over 17 years of production experience, was recruited to Marvel last year to manage the expanded scope of studio operations; and Feige, recently appointed President of Production, has worked side by side with Arad for the past eight years during Marvel's impressive production run.
"I have helped to build Marvel into a very special company, and on the heels of the tremendous success of 'X-Men: The Last Stand,' I felt like it was the right time for me to move away from the day to day corporate responsibilities in order to focus on what I love best - creating and producing. I am leaving behind a great team to run the studio, and I expect to remain actively involved in the development and production of many Marvel films in the years to come," said Arad.
Mort Handel, Marvel's Chairman of the Board, commented, "Avi has been a driving force at Marvel, and he and his team are credited with producing some of the highest grossing films in history, including this past weekend's blockbuster 'X-Men: The Last Stand' and 'Spider-Man,' 'Hulk,' and 'Fantastic Four.' His vision and leadership will be missed, but we understand Avi's desire to pursue a broader array of opportunities and wish him the best of luck. Going forward, we are fortunate to have a deep bench led by Michael Helfant and Kevin Feige who will assume the bulk of Avi's company responsibilities." In addition, Sid Ganis, a Marvel Director, Independent Producer and the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will assist Marvel during the transition.
Michael Helfant, who joined Marvel in November 2005, has over 22 years of entertainment industry experience, most recently as COO of Beacon Pictures, a major independent motion picture production company whose recent feature film releases include Open Range, Raising Helen and Ladder 49. Prior to Beacon, Helfant was Senior Executive Vice President of Dimension Films ("Spy Kids," "Scream" and "Scary Movie" franchises, and The Others), a division of Miramax Film Corp. from 1999-2002. Helfant also served as Executive Vice President, Head of Business Operations and Acquisitions at Interscope Communications, Inc. (Runaway Bride, Pitch Black, Mr. Holland's Opus and Jumanji), and Senior Vice President of Sovereign Pictures, Inc (Reversal of Fortune, My Left Foot, The Commitments and Cinema Paradiso). Helfant started his career as an entertainment attorney with Loeb & Loeb in Century City. Helfant is a graduate of the JD/MBA program at UCLA.
Kevin Feige has over ten years of entertainment experience, including eight years developing feature films and entertainment based on Marvel characters. He joined Marvel Studios in 2000 as Executive Vice President and was recently promoted to President, Production. He has been actively involved in Marvel's feature film projects, serving as Executive Producer on X-Men: The Last Stand, Spider-Man, The Hulk, The Punisher and Fantastic Four; Co-Producer on X2: X-Men United and Daredevil and as a production executive on Spider-Man. Prior to joining Marvel Studios, Feige worked for Producer Lauren Shuler Donner and Director Richard Donner at The Donners' Company. While there, he worked on films including Volcano, starring Tommy Lee Jones and the hit romantic comedy You've Got Mail, directed by Nora Ephron and starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. He then transitioned into development which led to an Associate Producer role on the film that revamped the comic book genre, X-Men. It was there that he started his work in the Marvel Universe, developing the X-Men feature for two years with Lauren and Director Bryan Singer, and serving as the film's Associate Producer. Feige graduated from the University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television.

dictatorship \dik-tay-tor-ship\ n. a form of government in which the ruler is not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition. Sums it up, huh?
Republicans say Democrats live in a pre-9/11 world. Well, if that means a world with laws, civil liberties, peace, functioning media, honesty and American values, that's a nice world to live in.
Doesn't it make you angry that our President has used the deaths of nearly 3,000 innocent people as an excuse to wage his politics of fear and his war for oil - all while barely going after bin Laden?
allright I got that crap off my chest,
it just make me crazy that poeple can be so blind and not have open mind or eyes to see both sides and understand it.
very blind Republican's and
Blind Democrats
open your eyes!!
Let me tell you, you haven't lived until you've gone drinkin' with Dick Cheney. That guy can drink and drive (2 DUIs) and drink and shoot (1 lawyer victim) with the worst of them.
The President says America is addicted to oil? He should know. He's the dealer. And no dealer is going to help his best customer kick the habit. No matter what he says.
Under Big Brother Bush, the NSA has shades of the Soviet KGB. But the Neocons can't use terror against us, they can't get away with illegal spying if we spread the word about warrantless wiretapping.

Diagnosis Confirmed: Date, Artwork & More Revealed!
- Emmy award winner Dick Van Dyke stars as Dr. Mark Sloan, a dedicated doctor who dabbles in detective work in DIAGNOSIS MURDER. Caring and compassionate, Dr. Sloan enlists the help of his police detective son, Steve (Barry Van Dyke) whenever he suspects one of his patients is the victim of foul play. And he won’t rest until the bad guys are put to bed - permanently! Working alongside Sloan is pathologist Amanda Bentley (Victoria Rowell). For star performances and classic “whodunit” suspense, the right prescription is DIAGNOSIS MURDER.
Last week we told you to expect Diagnosis Murder season 1 in September, and now we have a date; September 12. The 5 disc set runs for 885 mins, so it appears to be just the first season episodes (19 episodes). Lee Goldberg posted on his forum that the studio was planning to leave the TV movies, and the pilot (from Jake and the Fatman) off the set, and it appears that's what they've done. We'll let you know once we get more information from the studio about this, and whether the set will contain any bonus material.

The X-Files 2
Source: SCI FI Wire May 19, 2006
Frank Spotnitz tells SCI FI Wire that he has signed on to help write The X-Files 2.
"There's still a very good chance that we will all do another ' X-Files' movie," Spotnitz said. Spotnitz was an executive producer on the show, which starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
Another film is expected to get underway once series creator Chris Carter and Fox settle legal matters. Spotnitz says Duchovny, Anderson and himself have deals in place.
The script has not been written, but the idea is in place. "We're not going into the mythology [in the sequel]," Spotnitz added, saying it will be more like a stand-alone episode. "Of course, we will catch up with the characters and what is going on in their lives, but it's not about the alien conspiracy. It's not about that."

Nearly a month ago we posted news featuring comments from Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles talking about behind-the-scenes material that was shot for the upcoming season 1 DVD set, but it's been quiet on the news front since then. Quiet, until today.
We've just learned that season 1 will be released on September 5! The 6 disc set will include all 22 episodes from season 1, along with some awesome extras:
- Unaired Scenes
- Supernatural: Tales From the Edge of Darkness
- Day in the Life of Jared and Jensen
- Gag Reel
- Cast/Crew Commentaries
- and a DVD-ROM sneak-peek of Season 2
We don't have full A/V specs just yet (though we suspect it will be anamorphic widescreen video), so we'll likely have an update with those in the next day or two, but we can tell you the set will sell for the suggested price of $59.98. Here's a look at the artwork:

- All fourteen episodes from South Park's out-of-control eighth season are now available for the first time in this exclusive 3-disc collector's set. Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman find themselves in the middle of hot-button political issues and celebrity shenanigans. Season eight is capped off with a very special Christmas episode done in the way only South Park does Christmas! For these four boys, it's all part of growing up in South Park!
Paramount/Comedy Central has announced that the eighth season of South Park will be released on August 29. The 3 disc set includes all 14 episodes (308 mins), including "Good Times with Weapons," "AWESOM-O" and "The Passion of the Jew." The information from Paramount doesn't list any extras, but it's likely the set will contain the infamous "mini-commentaries" from Matt and Trey.

Welcome to Spring, 2006. Where's Weeds? Last December we posted news that there was a trailer on Lionsgate's DVD for the film Happy Endings that said to expect the first season of Showtime's hit series Weeds in "Spring 2006". Here we are in that season of that year, and still no announcement from Lionsgate just yet, while they're already announcing titles for Summer 2006. So we don't expect this, once announced, to have a ship date prior to either June or July.
But that announcement has to be on the way, because we DID get the front and rear box art for the package! And, with the rear cover art, we got a list of extras as well! Here's that list, followed by the artwork. Stay tuned for more info in the not too distant future, about the DVDs for the show who's star (Mary Louise Parker) won the Golden Globe over all of those Desperate Housewives!!
- "Smokey Snippets"
- Six Commentaries with Cast and Crew
- "Smoke and Mirrors" Original Marijuana Mockumentary
- Agrestic Herbal Recipes
- Showtime Original Content Including Special On Suburbia
- Music Video
- Full Screen Presentation
- 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital Audio
- DVD Menus [Really? Are Studios STILL Listing Menus As "Bonus Features"? What Are They Smoking? - DAVE]
- Closed Captions

Fox has made the season 4 artwork available to us, which we didn't have when we posted the announcement of the release last week. The set will be released on July 18, and can be preordered from Amazon.com for $27.99.

IN STORES AUGUST 15TH FROM SHOUT! FACTORY
LOS ANGELES, CA - Shout! Factory announces the return of "Weird Al" Yankovic to the family television set as "The Weird Al Show" makes its way to DVD. The Weird Al Show: The Complete Series will brighten the day of legions of Weird Al's fans when it arrives in stores on August 15th. The three-disc set contains all 13 hilarious episodes of the series which ran on CBS during the 1997-1998 television season. Each episode features a commentary by Weird Al, producer Tom Frank and director Peyton Reed, plus guest commentaries from some of the cast members, including Judy Tenuta and Emo Philips. The Weird Al Show: The Complete Series three-disc set will be available for the suggested retail price of $34.98.
As an inventor living in a secret subterranean workshop, Weird Al's world includes his pet (Harvey the Wonder Hamster), his superhero neighbor (The Hooded Avenger), the twisted animated "Adventures Of Fatman" and a roster of friends and kooky characters. Guest stars appear throughout the season, including Drew Carey, Fred Willard, Dick Clark, The Amazing Johnathan, Teri Garr, Victoria Jackson, Dick Van Patten, Dr. Demento, Daisy Fuentes, Fabio, Dweezil Zappa, Alex Trebec, Gilbert Gottfried, Michael McKean, Patton Oswalt, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Stan Freberg, and many more! Several episodes include live musical performances from acts like Hanson, Barenaked Ladies, and of course, Al himself.
Ever since his 1983 self-titled breakthrough album, "Weird Al" Yankovic has been unsurpassed as a proven purveyor of parody and musical satire. His classic film, UHF, a string of Grammy® Awards and an avid (if not rabid) fan following made his 1997 television series, "The Weird Al Show," a cosmic inevitability. Yankovic's signature warped comedy, original songs, TV and movie spoofs, offbeat animation, and ability to attract a wonderful and motley collection of special surprise guests are what make the 13 episodes of this CBS Saturday morning show a treasure chest of all things Al.

The opposing viewpoints of mutant leaders Charles Xavier, who preaches tolerance, and Magneto, who believes in the survival of the fittest, are put to the ultimate test – triggering the war to end all wars.
Regis Philbin to Host America's Got Talent
Emmy Award-winning television legend Regis Philbin (Live with Regis & Kelly, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire) has been chosen as host of NBC's America's Got Talent, the new talent competition series from Simon Cowell (American Idol) and FremantleMedia (American Idol) that will premiere with a special two-hour broadcast on Wednesday, June 21 (8-10 p.m. ET).
The regular telecast time of America's Got Talent will be Wednesdays, 9-10 p.m. ET; (30-minute results shows will air on Thursdays beginning July 13, 8:30-9 p.m. ET).
"Regis is one of America's most recognizable and beloved TV personalities. I couldn't be more pleased to have him as the host of 'America's Got Talent' working alongside Simon Cowell and the excellent team of producers," said Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment.
"For years I've thought about hosting a variety show on television but I could never put it together in my mind," said Philbin. "Finally, here it is and I'm thrilled to be a part of it."
"I am delighted that Regis has agreed to host 'America's Got Talent,'" said Cowell. "Regis is just the best, and I am really looking forward to working with him."
"Not only will Regis bring a wealth of experience and credibility to the show, but he will be the perfect mentor for all the fresh untried talent we hope to find," added executive producer Ken Warwick.
Cowell and FremantleMedia will bring the hottest performers from across the country to TV audiences in this new series that allows viewers to determine who will walk away with a $1 million cash prize. The series features a colorful array of hopeful future stars. Singers, dancers, comedic performers and unique acts of all ages will have a chance to strut and perform in front of a panel of judges who will determine which acts advance to the final rounds. (The judges will be announced at a later date.)
Philbin's vast and varied career in television virtually matches the medium's history. After a career in local news, he first gained national attention as sidekick to host Joey Bishop's late-night The Joey Bishop Show before moving on to become a popular fixture in Los Angeles with his own morning talk show, "AM Los Angeles." Philbin eventually moved the show to New York and also became executive producer where it became a national daily syndicated hit as Live with Regis & Kathie Lee and currently as Live with Regis & Kelly with host Kelly Ripa.
In 1999, Philbin hosted the hottest show on television with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, an hour-long primetime game show that was telecast several times a week.
Along the way, Philbin endeared himself to American audiences by hosting many specials and holiday events, including New Year's Rockin' Eve 2005, Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade and Christmas in Rockefeller Center, among others. He also is a regular fixture as a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman and NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno, among many other talk shows.
Philbin has guest-starred in such series as Becker, Mad About You, Hope & Faith, Less Than Perfect, Spin City, Caroline in the City and Seinfeld. Among his film credits, Philbin will voice one of the characters in the upcoming Shrek the Third animated feature due in 2007.
Philbin won an Emmy each as host of "Live with Regis" and for Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.
America's Got Talent is produced by Cowell's SYCO TV production company and FremantleMedia. Cowell, Warwick and Cecile Frot-Coutaz (American Idol) are the executive producers. Jason Raff (Three Wishes) is the co-executive producer.
